make the game easier to run

Recommended Posts

i find it irritating that my lappy overheats. it's got a 2gig processor and just walking through the forest makes it heat up and the graphics get choppy. Is there a way to refine the graphics engine so that it doesn't require as much processing to run(obviously not ai probs)?  yes i've tried all the settings....

I've added something to netbook mode that might help you out. On windows we pin a core in our main loop to do accurate timing (Windows sleep functions are notoriously inaccurate). A lot of laptops don't like that, however. I've made it so that it will sleep a bit if it can (at the cost of the occasional dropped frame).

It will go live in Wedesday's build. Don't forget to enable netbook mode, and tell me how it works for you!

i've just about had it with don't starve....*sigh* i used to be able to run this game on my computer, right now it doesn't matter what settings i use, and i tweaked them all, the lappy overheats, pretty much unless i'm playing in a savannah, or rocky biome within a few minutes of gameplay the overheat problem happens, almost as soon as anything fun happens. low sanity? pc overheat, around bees? same thing, walking through the forest? same, it's not the memory usage it's the processing power it takes cause the cpu is pegged,

tried disabling bloom, distortion, enabled netbook mode, small textures, and reduced the resolution, i'm still getting the same stuff (and the game looks bad) by day 2 on a fresh game of just exploring the lappy is so hot i have to take my hands off the keyboard, is this something to do with all the object tracking the game has to do?

i loaded the public preview late last night, the 2 day thing happened with both versions though, i'll give it another shot today though.

ok on public preview, i set the settings to 1366*768, everything enabled, no netbook mode, large textures, and ran it for an hour before the heat started to get too bad.

what i have now used to be a good lappy 4 years ago, but its now what anyone can buy in walmart, sorry not really interested in spending another 500 bucks or better to run a 20$ game when i can spend another 40$ or less for a different game. This is why kevin is working on the issue, people won't purchase the game if they can't run it.

Btw kevin with bloom and distortion off and in netbook mode the public preview seems to run a LOT better, still havn't put it through anything really strenuous yet, but it's fine for basic exploration and hunting. i need to check the forest with low sanity and mobs moving around.

on a side note that annoying running back and forth animation when your trying to plant or build things close together can that be fixed? it's driving me up the wall.

lets see the only game i've really played is fate, and a bunch of old indies(laxius power is quite fun btw), morrowind, i think i had diablo 2 installed at one point, and have played ryl2 i think that was on the old lappy. tbh? havn't really installed many mmo's on this one, and i'm pretty sure this could run wow, though it's been like 7 years since i played. I've mostly been trying to stay out of the mmo action so a lot of the 3d graphics have been off limits, they are too addictive, and i have a wife and kids now. i should probably test it out on another game. when i run fate the keyboard gets warm but the framrate never starts to drop, and thats a 3d dungeon crawler hack and slash, with random gen levels. tbh i havn't really run this pc through a lot of serious gaming time....

yeah i think don't starve actually is the most graphical game this lappy has ever had installed, or at the very least the most graphically polished

Just wondering if the machine has a heat problem in general, or if we are running especially hot. My macbook air, for example, runs its fan full-bore when I play FTL.

I just checked - Morrowind is more than a decade old. I feel old now. :(

I meant have you another computer at home better than your. if yes install steam and ds on.

i only have the lappy, i travel for a living so owning a pc is out of the question.

with bloom and distortion with netbook mode off i was able to play for 1.5 hours before the fps drops hit, and that was while in my base area in a savannah, so the object count is pretty low.

the winter graphics cause a massive fps drop, everything goes into superslow mode, pretty much doesn't matter where i play. lappy overheats almost as soon as the snow graphic hits the ground.

for 500 dollars I got an excellent desktop that could play games like battlefield abeit at medium low settings,

Im sure theres good deal out there where you could get a less crappy computer

hrm seems to be the way the graphics get layered thats causing the overheat problem, not the amount of onscreen objects. for instance after the most recent update i only lasted about 15-20 minutes in winter from the snow ground effect... winter is 1/2 the game... i know this might not be the most favorable suggestion, but can netbook mode get winter tiles, and object graphics, instead of the overlay graphics?

The Devs certainly try, but they can only do so much to broaden the spec range they can support without gimping the overall visual quality or bloating the code to an unmanageable state. What you're asking for is static generation of a bunch of dynamic content (a bunch because snow levels vary; replacing the game logic to treat the "static" case differently would be unwieldly, especially at this stage of development).

Don't Starve already has low requirements. I run it smoothly in Full HD resolution using integrated graphics (my laptop does have a discrete video card, but I'm not using it, due to long known issues with Optimus support under Linux). What you're asking for is not viable.

so i finally got a heap of time to play again, and the cpu load has been reduced quite a bit, thanks. still having problems in king of winter when insanity hits, and things like bees, and multiple carnivorous plants onscreen cause fps drops.

so i've been playing a bit more lately. the lappy is fine most of the time now with small textures, and no bloom or distortion and netbook mode enabled. the only times i really get overheat are when any 2 of these things happen: low sanity, winter, rain, and large volumes of bees. it still take a more than a few minutes to overheat though. I've also noticed, that sometimes i'll be  getting low fps, then all of a sudden the game will just magically speed up for no reason, and the lappy will have not been overheated, which is odd.

kevin here are the system specs.
